To be more detailed, most of the temple in Bali that being used to be the place for praying and offerings for most Hindus always have the uniqueness of Bali’s style of architectures. But, Maospahit Temple is different. This temple has the architecture of East Java.
Where is the difference?
If most of Balinese architecture building using red bricks combined with reliefs, javanese architecture has more reliefs than the balinese style one. In Maospahit temple you will find a terracotta statue in the right and left corner, and find garuda and bima relief on the gate. Most of the wall are clean and neat.
Based on the history of Babad wongayah Dalem, this temple was one of Sri Kbo Iwo’s heritage, he was a famous architect who lived in 1278M (Caka 1200)
He was built this temple as a part of his dharma as the architect of Badung. Babad Wongayah Dalem also explained that Candi Raras Maospahit that placed inside the temple is the main offering place and placed between 2 ancient statues.
Next to Candi Raras Maospahit, lies Candi Gedong Majapahit facing South. This Candi/statue was built by King of Badung’s request and was built years after Sri Kbo Iwo died after facing Gajah Mada on ta battle.
To get the original style of architecture from east java, the king sent one of the builder to Majapahit, then nowadays, these two statue become the main offering place inside the temple.
Maospahit temple consists of 5 parts, in balinese they called Panca Mandala. First section consists of Candi Raras Maospahit and Candi Gedong Majapahit. The other 4 parts consists of Candi Kusuma located on the west side, Candi Renggat in the south, Jaba sisi on the west side and Jaba Tengah in the middle part.
Nowadays, this Maospahit Temple is not only a place for praying and offering but it become one of the heritage of Bali. Most of the big ceremony in Balinese calendar such as Purnama Jyesta to worship Ratu Ayu Mas Maospahit and Purnama Kalima to worship Ida Bhatara Lingsir Sakti.
